“To a man with a hammer, everything looks like a nail.” - Mark Twain

We sometimes get carried away. When I say “we,” I am speaking specifically about people who work in the digital technology field. Especially when it comes to solving real-life problems.
Sometimes we need to curb our technology optimism a bit and take a step back and understand that, in some cases, some problems can be solved even more efficiently without a technology solution or an app.
Before you call me a luddite, let me explain.

Nowadays, for example, the buzzword seems to be an “app.” So, from observation, when most technologist are asked how they will help a client solve a particular problem, they tend to suggest an “app.” This is typically something that a client prompts the technologist to deploy because they heard someone talk about apps, but it sometimes a function of experience and the skills of the technologist, i.e. apps are all they know.
It’s at this point that we need to remember as technologists the very basic and simplified definition of the word technology, which can be put as an improved and more efficient way of doing something.
With this definition in mind, you open up a toolbox of solutions that you can best use to solve a problem. Don’t try to hammer every problem. Sometimes you need a screw.
